Another Three Sisters Make "Kids Hot Jammy Piece"

My 12-year-old daughter, Sophie, and I were lucky enough to host her stepsister (Isabella, who is also 12), and their 4-year-old half-sister (Mayzie) for New Year's Eve. We had a great evening watching movies, eating pizza, and basically just hanging out.

I'd been planning to make the "Kids Hot Jammy Piece," which appears on page 37 of Three Sisters Bake (by Gillian Reith, Nichola Reith, and Linsey Reith), but I was a little under-the-weather and didn't feel up to cooking. Fortunately, Sophie and Isabella were eager to try out the recipe, so I supervised (and snapped some photos) while the girls put on their metaphorical baking caps and got to work.

For this tasty treat, I chose some nice white bread that I picked up at Trader Joe's while visiting North Carolina. Though the recipe calls for raspberry jam, I decided the girls should use strawberry preserves, because I had a fresh jar in my refridgerator. The preserves proved a bit difficult to spread on the bread, so if I were to do this again, I'd probably use a jam or jelly.

This issue did not affect the taste, though!

The girls worked well as a team. Isabella made the sandwich while Sophie mixed the egg, heavy cream, and salt in a small bowl. She also prepared the frying pan with a little unsalted butter.

After dipping the sandwich in the mixture, Sophie placed it in the pan, and the girls took turns checking on it.

Looking good!!!

Okay, so the final product (below) looks a bit messy, but doesn't it also look delicious? We'd considered adding maple syrup, but we realized this was going to be sweet enough without it.

The girls weren't sure what to think, so they called in Mayzie and offered her the first bite. She was more than happy to oblige!

We all nibbled on the rest of it once we saw Mayzie's happy reaction. Sophie and Isabella were excited to have made something so yummy, and since it was also quick and easy, they decided to make a few more!

As a mom (and babysitter), it was nice to have a fun activity to keep the girls occupied. The older kids even let Mayzie crack an egg into a bowl and add salt during their second run, so they were all in on the process. I guess we have yet another three sisters who enjoy collaborating in the kitchen!! ;-)

Thanks for reading and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!
